Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics have officially announced the name of sequel to the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham Asylum. The game is entitled Batman: Arkham City and it will be released in the autumn of 2011 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It is developed by Rocksteady Studios, the same outfit behind the first title in the series.

Batman: Arkham City will take place in a sealed-off district of Gotham, dedicated to the criminally insane. Many gamers have long suspected  that it will have such a setting, given the secret office of Warden Sharp that could be be found in Arkham Asylum. He planned to create close a section of the city where he would let all the criminals roam free and wreak havoc upon each other, according to some of the items found in the room.

The sequel is set to introduce a new story alongside and all-star cast of classic characters. Some of the villains that are already known to be part of the Arkham City are Talia Al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Harvey Two-Face. Also, new gameplay elements are promised in the press release associated with this announcement, but no further details are given. What it is known at this moment is that the detective vision will change, allowing player to experience the impressive visuals of the game all the time.

David Hego, the art director of the series, recently revealed that he was disappointed by the fact that many players finished the first game without ever disabling the detective vision, thus missing out on the great aesthetic design of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Those who cannot wait for the new game can also enter a sweepstakes until the 1st of September. Five 1st place winners will received a Batman Black and White Statue based on the model from the game, while ten runners-up will get a copy of the graphic novel inspired by Arkham Asylum.
