Supergiant Games together with Sony has announced that the charming role-playing game Bastion is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita platforms sometime next year.

Bastion is the studio's first video game, originally released in 2011 for Xbox 360, Windows PC, Mac OS X and Linux.

The independent title was received very well due to its endearing hand-painted art style and its unique atmosphere. The game follows a young boy navigating through a floating, fantasy-themed environment, featuring a dynamic voiceover from a mysterious narrator.

Bastion has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, and it will surely sell even more when it is released on the PS Vita and PlayStation 4 gaming systems, as its colorful visuals haven't aged one bit, and it's oozing as much atmosphere as ever.

The new platform announcement came during this year's edition of the PlayStation Experience event, that was held in Las Vegas over the weekend.

The studio's second game, Transistor, made its debut in May this year, on the PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Mac OS X and Linux platforms, and was similarly hailed as a gorgeous and satisfying science-fiction role-playing game with a very strong artistic direction.

The future of Bastion

Developer Supergiant Games' entry on the PlayStation Blog reveals that Bastion will be released on the PS4 and Vita at a yet unknown date in 2015, and that the specific details on pricing and region availability have not been set in stone yet.

The game will be cross-buy compatible between the two consoles, meaning that if you purchase it for one of the systems, you'll automatically be able to play on the other one. In addition to this, the team is also looking to make Bastion cross-save compatible, in order to allow gamers to seamlessly transfer data between devices and pick the game up right where they left it when switching between them.

The PS Vita and PS4 ports of Bastion are in the hands of BlitWorks, a known studio specializing in console ports, responsible for the console versions of other indie darlings such as Spelunky and Fez.

The main draw of the action role-playing game is the rich storytelling style, its highly responsive and satisfying gameplay, and the adorable and colorful art style, blending whimsical elements with the darker undertones of an apocalyptic calamity.

The game won many awards and was praised for its deceptively complex combat system, although its focus is more on the narrative than on the action side of things.
