Hon Lau, Security Response Engineer at Symantec has published a post on the company's Security Response Weblog, in which the public's attention is drawn to the generalization of online crime via
specialized tools. RAT Systems is an outfit that has released a "basic Trojan package" addressing the general audience. "The kit contains various components to facilitate the creation, distribution, and maintenance of Trojan programs. The Trojans created by this kit contain functionality to steal information from various banking and financial Web sites. They also have a back door that allows the attacker to issue commands to the Trojan at a later date. To top it off, they have built-in mechanisms to avoid detection and removal by security software. All in all, it is a pretty sophisticated piece of kit," wrote Hon Lau.

The kit permits the creation of Trojan files through a Malware executable generator. Via a built configuration or the toolkit's GUI, customizable parameters and features are made available in order to create a personalized Trojan. Additionally, a polymorphic code generator attributes a random form and stealth capabilities to the malicious item of code. RAT Systems complemented the offer with a sample of exploit code designed for hosting on a malicious Website in order to intermediate the download of malicious code. The creators of the toolkit even supplied an integrated manual providing step-by-step instructions.

"There are reports that this Trojan kit is available to buy at a price of around $20. What this particular Trojan kit illustrates is just how low the bar is now set for pretty much anybody with basic computer skills wanting to enter the online crime arena. Here at Symantec, we have been detecting Trojans created by this kit and also the files in the kit itself. The kit, in this case, creates a family of back door Trojans that we call Backdoor.Nibu," concluded Hon Lau.
