Signs of unauthorized access have been detected on the systems of Bartell Hotels in five locations in San Diego, exposing credit and debit card details.

The company informs that the security incident occurred between February 16 and May 13 this year, and credit card data, including card number and name of the owner, may have been compromised by an unknown intruder.

Affected by the incident are Best Western Plus Island Palms Hotel & Marina, The Dana on Mission Bay, Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites, Pacific Terrace Hotel, and the Days Hotel–Hotel Circle.

Bartell Hotels is currently cooperating with law enforcement in the investigation of the intrusion order to determine the identity of the attacker and of the affected customers.

At the moment there is no information about how the security of the systems was circumvented, but the glitch has been eliminated.

“Bartell Hotels encourages its guests to remain vigilant by reviewing their account statements, and monitoring their credit reports for suspicious activity,” Richard Bartell, president of Bartell Hotels, said in an official statement.

According to an online source, between 40,000 and 45,000 individuals were affected by the incident, and those that provided their email address to the hotels, 16,432 customers, are currently informed of the breach and the financial impact it comes with.
