Back in 2011, just weeks before she announced her marriage to British comedian Russell Brand was over after a little over a year, Katy Perry was on Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011 special. Before the interview, though, Walters threw major shade at Katy.

It’s Katy herself who makes the surprising revelation in an interview with the latest issue of Billboard magazine.

She recalls how difficult it was for her to find time for the interview and how, despite her honest attempts, she still arrived late for it.

Apparently, tardiness is something that Walters doesn’t take kindly to.

“I shouldn't have done the interview: I was playing Madison Square Garden that same night, and I knew that the end of my marriage [to Brand] was coming,” the pop star says.

“I was just exhausted and stressed. I'd prepped everyone that I was running late, but Barbara showed up at the original time anyway,” Katy continues.

“When I got there, I apologized immediately, but then she said to me, ‘You know, I've only ever waited for one other person this long, and you know who that person was? Judy Garland. You know how she turned out, right?’ I was like, ‘Oh, snap! Yes, [expletive]!’,” Katy says.

Garland, for those who don’t know, had a very troubled life and died in 1969 of a drug overdose, when she was 47 years old.

Though she got dissed, Katy says she really didn’t mind because she understood Walters’ point of view. If anything, the fault was her own for not knowing to prioritize and manage her other commitments better.

“I think it's the coolest thing that Barbara Walters shaded me. I just couldn't tell her as we were sitting down for a mega-interview, ‘Hey, my marriage is falling apart. Give me a break’,” she says.

Below is the 2011 interview. The video is not top quality but, even so, Katy’s answers to Barbara’s questions on marriage are interesting, especially knowing what happened weeks later.
