The Bangladeshi government has approved a draft of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act that would bring some changes to existing legislation.

According to The Daily Star, one the most significant changes of the original law (2006) is the fact that cybercriminals will face a minimum jail term of 7 years and a maximum sentence of 14 years. Currently, the maximum punishment is 10 years.

In addition, police will be allowed to arrest a suspected offender without a warrant. However, they will have to present the suspect before a judge within 24 hours.

It’s uncertain if the maximum fine limit, which is currently at 10 million Bangladeshi Taka ($128,000 / €96,000), will be changed.

As far as bails are concerned, if the amended version of the ICT Act goes into force, cyber crimes will become non-bailable. This means that only a judge will be able to grant bail.
