Microsoft is looking to hire thousands of new workers in China, chief executive officer Steve Ballmer said during a press conference in Shanghai.

At this point, the local Microsoft branch has 4,000 employees, so the Chinese workforce could more than double in approximately one year if Ballmer’s plan goes through.

According to a new report issued by Bloomberg, the new workers would help the company focus a bit more on cloud computing services, including Windows Azure.

The company will officially launch a public preview of the service in China as early as next month, as it has already signed a deal with 12Vianet Group in November 2012.

Microsoft is focusing a lot more on cloud services these days, with the company trying to expand this particular business in several countries across the globe. Australia, for instance, will host two new data centers specifically built for this kind of applications.
