It turns out that the big Baldur's Gate announcement that was teased earlier today is actually Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, a brand new version of the original game that's updated for current platforms.

Baldur's Gate fans pretty much lost all hope of seeing a new game in the series but it seems that Beamdog and its Overhaul team is trying to bring back the original game in the form of an Enhanced Edition.

While the game's website is still pretty much unresponsive, largely because of the influx of visitors, the first details have arrived via Joystiq.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is more than just a HD remake, as Overhaul has the source code of the original game and is "making a significant update" to it.

No other details are known as of yet, although the game will be published by Atari, the owner of the video game series, and is licensed by Wizards of the Coast, which owns of the Dungeons & Dragons IP.

Expect to hear some more details, as well as on what platforms this Enhanced Edition will appear, soon.
