The developers working on the Enhanced Edition for Baldur’s Gate at Overhaul Games have confirmed that their long-term goal is to create Baldur’s Gate 3 and that they are considering using Kickstarter in order to fund the development process.

Cameron Tofer, who is in charge of research and development at Beamdog and Overhaul, has told GameSpy that, “Baldur’s Gate 3 has been our long term goal. We have a lot of things to put in place before such a project can be launched.

“So currently there is no such project but that’s the one we want to do. Our thoughts have been that Enhanced Edition for BG 1 and 2 just make sense before there’s any Baldur’s Gate 3.”

The developer added, “We’re totally thinking Kickstarter. It just makes so much sense and solves so many problems. I think what Brian is doing with Wasteland is very interesting.”

It’s not yet clear how much the development process for Baldur’s Gate 3 would cost and how Beamdog and Overhaul would be able to entice players to pay for a third game in the series .

At the moment the two companies are working on the Enhanced Editions for the first two titles in the series, which are set to also include the expansion Tales of the Sword Coast and Throne of Baal.

The developers have also promised that they will include new side stories, new characters and new abilities for gamers to explore.

The games will also include more in-depth universe explanations and streamlined mechanics.

They will still use the Infinity Engine, but the development teams plans to upgrade it in order to deliver better quality and performance on modern hardware.

Tofer believes that players will be interested in playing the Enhanced Editions for Baldur’s Gate because they offer a very different experience from what modern role-playing games can deliver.

The games are expected to launch during the summer of this year.
