Emap publisher closes down US men's magazine

This is a sad day, indeed. Nothing could be worse than this (maybe if 'Playboy' would shut down?) - the UK publisher Emap Plc just announced that, because of marketing difficulties, the US edition of the famous men's magazine will not appear anymore.

This is the third youth-oriented magazine this year that gets tossed at the garbage for the same reason, following 'Elle Girl' and 'Teen People'. 'FHM' was launched in the United States in 1999 and had a monthly average circulation of about 1.25 million but the lack of advertisers led the publisher to reduce this number considerably over the past month.

'Trading conditions in the U.S. market have deteriorated over the past 12 months and we do not expect an improvement in the near term. In these circumstances we do not anticipate that the title would be able to trade on a profitable basis going forward.', a statement from Emap read.

The other approximately 30 editions around the world, including the ones in Britain, France and Russia, will not be affected by the decision. That means that other men, in other countries, will be able to continue to enjoy each month the scantily clad women that grace the covers of 'FHM'. However, the official website of the magazine will remain functional and will be updated just as before the shut down.

Useless to say, feminists and women all over the world received the news of the closure of 'FHM' US with the utmost joy, saying that it was nothing but a vehicle for the objectification of women that presented them as 'pieces of meat on display'. Well, this is way too complicated to get into now... So, enjoy it while it lasts: the last number of the US mag will come out in March 2007.
