Without using a PC connectivity

People that cannot afford to buy high-end smartphones or Pocket PCs will probably have troubles transferring their contacts from an old phone to a new one. Unless they're using JContactBackup, an application developed by Gowtham, an Indian hobbyist programmer.

The software can be used to backup all contacts from a phone into a CSV file, which can be transferred on another phone without the need of PC connectivity.

Depending on what features your handheld has, you'll be able to use Infrared connectivity, Bluetooth, or even a memory card.

Users will be required to install JContactBackup on both handsets if they intend to import the CSV file containing the contacts from an old phone to a new one. The installation can be done via GPRS, through WiFi or PC connectivity and requires that your phone features at least MIDP 2.0 with JSR-75 support.

You can check your manual to see if your gadget is compatible, but most low-budget handsets include this feature. If you need the software to backup your contacts in case you delete them by mistake, you will be able to export them in vCard format (text file) directly on your phone.

Still, you need to be aware that not all fields in the phone's agenda are compatible with JContactBackup, so you should choose a higher version of vCard format while exporting to include more fields.

Also, be sure that the phone where you want to export your contacts support this version of vCard, or the import process might not work. Supported vCard versions can be checked in the Export dialog window. As JContactBackup targets people that usually have cheap handsets and are looking for an easy and fast way to backup or transfer their contacts, the developer decided to distribute the application for free.
