Let's see: this year, we have the greatest reunions and/or comebacks in, like, the history of music! Spice Girls? Check. Take That? Check. The Police? Check. Smashing Pumpkins? Check. No Doubt? Check. Black Eyed Peas. Check. (I know, the last two are actually neither reunions nor comebacks, but bear with me on this one). That's a lot of checks right there and, now, you can add one more to the list: Backstreet Boys, who have just announced that they will be coming out with an album this October.

Sure, there is one lil' difference between the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys - namely, where the first ones are only back together for one final international tour during which they will not be performing any new material, the Boys are back for good, with a brand new album and supposedly more mature material. Do we really want them back? Well, that's just a question of how nostalgic each of us is feeling right now, so this is exactly why right now I'm writing this.

In 2005, the boys who were once named the most popular guys on planet Earth, now all grown up and a bit more wise, released their comeback material 'Never Gone'. The album did pretty well in the charts (peaking at number three in Billboard 200) and in terms of sales (750,000 items sold in the US and 3 million worldwide) but, if one were to compare its evolution to that of their previous records, it was a huge disappointment. Just for the sake of argument, the BSB's 'Millennium' (1999) sold 30 million copies worldwide. That's like, ten times more albums that their so-called glorious comeback album. I'm not saying anything - it's just simple math!

After 'Never Gone', Kevin Richardson announced that he would be leaving the boys to pursue a solo career. In return, the remaining four boys (men, now) stated that they would not be seeking a replacement for Kevin, as he is more than welcome to come back anytime he feels like it. And now we get to their sixth studio record, which has been done and will be released in the four-member format. The project is yet untitled but it will be preceded by the single 'Inconsolable', a 'piano-heavy rock ballad' that will hit the airwaves on August 27.

Frankly, I don't even know if we're to be happy about the release of yet another BSB material or run for cover. But this much is for sure: unless they come up with some new ideas, this old routine of 'I loved you, you screwed me, now I'm in so much pain that I'm crawling on all fours in the desert near burning cars' will become so boring that they might even end up by saying that 750,000 units sold was a blessing back in 2005!

NOBODY is making those numbers in the music industry anymore. Nowadays, 750,000 is very good. The boyband craze is over, and it's not fair to expect them to live up to past success when times have changed so much. Especially since a lot of their old fanbase has moved on. Even the most popular artists in the industry today can't live up to the success BSB had back then.

You cant really compare Millennium to Never Gone. The group has grown up so much. If they released Millennium now I doubt that it would have sold 750,000. Time has changed the music industry and The Backstreet Boys have done extremely well to adapt and continue to create music of such a high standard.
