As the Mobile Wireless Network increases in capacity

To understand better the main idea, in satellite communication, backhaul process means getting data to a certain point from which it can be easily transmitted to the satellite. Backhaul is used to get audio and video material to the main distribution points of the most important broadcast news organizations.

Backhaul, which is defined as carrying voice traffic from the cell site to the network core, is drawing a lot of interest from wireless operators. The reason is strictly financial, as wireless operators are aiming to cut the necessary costs as much as possible.

In telecommunications, backhauling concerns transporting traffic between access point sites and more centralized location points.

"Roughly 20% of mobile base stations in the United States are backhauled via wireless technologies today, while globally 65% of mobile base stations are linked via wireless backhaul. We see the number of base stations in the US using wireless for backhaul almost doubling by 2011 to help provide this higher backhaul capacity." stated Larry Swasey of Visant Strategies,

The need for backhaul is even bigger nowadays with the new smartphones and PDAa released on the market. Only last year the backhaul services spent more than $3.5 billion, according to" US Mobile Backhaul: Evolving market 2007".

The carriers' inability to address the towers with multiple high-speed base stations is definitely going to give others the possibility to reduce the base stations and use the backhal services of 6Mbps or less to manage the system.

"Data services, including multi-media downloads, and network upgrades to WCDMA/HSDPA and EV-DO have led to a surge in backhaul use by mobile carriers. As carriers deploy these evolutionary air-interfaces they must also provide more robust ties between deployed infrastructure and the greater Internet and telecom networks since the newer apps will require bigger pipes to the outside telecom world." said report author Andy Fuertes.

The report of Visant Strategies includes details regarding 2011 American backhaul traffic files, the number of backhaul links deployed as well as the links registered by capacity and type.
