Some parents keep a tight leash on their kids well into the latter's adolescence. The baby zebra pictured above, on the other hand, got to explore the great outdoor just days after it had been born.

The baby zebra arrived at Planckendael Zoo in Belgium nearly three weeks ago, on December 2. It's parents, mom Betina and dad Chris, are both Grevy's zebras, Zoo Borns reports.

The species is currently considered an endangered one, and conservationists estimate that just 2,500 such herbivores are left to inhabit Ethiopia and Kenya.

Habitat loss, hunting and disease are the main threats to these animals long-term survival.

Because there are so few Grevy's zebras left in the wild, the birth of this colt was especially welcomed by conservationists who are now working to save the species from going extinct.

The baby zebra born at Belgium's Planckendael Zoo is a male, and keepers have decided to name it Oscar. The tiny herbivore now shares an enclosure with eight others of its kind.
