Unfortunately, the baby monkey's mom rejected it shortly after birth

This past May 30, a white-faced saki monkey living in captivity at Zoo Miami in the United States delivered an adorable bundle of joy.

Unfortunately, the monkey mom rejected its offspring shortly after birth. Keepers cannot say why it did so, but argue that, as saddening as it may be, things like this do sometimes happen.

Since its mother is refusing to look after it or at least feed it, the young white-faced saki monkey is now being hand-raised by staff at Zoo Miami.

Thus, keepers are taking turns feeding it, keeping it out of trouble, and making sure that it has everything it might want or desire, Zoo Borns informs.

Interestingly enough, the baby monkey is not only its mother's first offspring, but also the first of its kind to have until now been born at this facility in the United States.

According to wildlife researchers, white-faced saki monkeys inhabit Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela. They spend most of their time up in trees, and rarely visit the ground.

Presently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature considers the species to be a vulnerable one. The chief threats to the white-faced saki monkey's long-term survival are habitat loss and hunting either for food or for the pet trade.
