Caretakers at Bristol Zoo Gardens in the UK are happy to announce that a baby pygmy hippo born at this facility about three weeks ago is thriving under the careful watch of its parents.

According to Daily Mail, the tiny hippo was born to mom Sirana and dad Nato, and weighed just 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) when it first arrived into this world.

However, it now tips the scale at about 1 stone (6.2 kilograms). As an adult, it will weight about 43 stones (275 kilograms).

The calf, named Winnie, has bonded very well with both its parents, and Sinara and Nato now share the task of constantly looking after it and making sure it stays out of trouble.

Still, keepers say that Sinara is the one that is being highly protective of the baby hippo.

“Winnie follows Sirana a lot. Sirana is very protective and doesn't let her stay in deep water for too long,” curator Lynsey Bugg reportedly told the press.

“Winnie is doing brilliantly, she's putting on weight really well, she is starting to get a bit chunky,” the zoo employee added.

In order to make sure that no harm comes to Bristol Zoo Garden's new arrival, keepers have decided to only let it play in a heated pool for the time being.
