Staff at the Buffalo Zoo has recently announced the birth of a baby Western lowland gorilla. It was born only a few days ago, on September 4, and appears to be in perfectly good health.

Despite the fact that she has never given birth before, its mother, 12-year-old Lily, is doing a great job looking after it. The baby gorilla's father, 26-year-old Koga, is keeping a close eye on both of them.

Employees at the Buffalo Zoo explain that, since they haven't been able to get very close to the gorilla family, they can’t say whether the baby is a boy or a girl.

They are, however, confident that it will not take long for them to solve this little mystery, sources say.

Presently, Western lowland gorillas are considered a critically endangered species. Deforestation and the bush meat trade up and running in central Africa are the main reasons they are now facing extinction.
