A baby girl in Massachusetts, US, suffocated to death after her parents covered her hair with mayonnaise and then put a plastic bag over her head. Apparently, the bag slipped while the girl was napping and asphyxiated the infant.

Seeing how the girl was alone when this happened, she had little chances to survive the incident. It is understood that, when her parents finally took the time to check up on her, she was already dead.

Why would anyone put mayo on a kid's head?

When questioned by police officers, the girl's parents, whose identity has not yet been made public, told them that the reason why they covered the 18-month-old girl's hair with mayonnaise was because they were trying to rid her of lice.

No, mayonnaise does not a proper medical treatment for lice make. However, it looks like plenty of people who either can't afford to see a doctor or who simply cannot be bothered to waste time visiting a local clinic turn to this remedy quite often.

These folks believe that the oil found in mayonnaise can suffocate lice and eventually kill them. Even if this were true, this does not change the fact that mayo has no effect whatsoever on lice eggs. Otherwise put, it's best to use this condiment just to make hamburgers taste a wee better.

It is understood that, having covered her in mayo and placed a plastic bag over her head, the girl's parents left her alone for several hours. When they returned to check up on her, the infant was dead. The only thing left to do was to contact authorities and tell them about the incident.

What's interesting is that, although they had one other child with lice on their hands, the girl's parents only used the mayonnaise remedy to try and treat the 18-month-old. The other child, a boy, simply had his head shaved clean and then washed, Daily Mail reports.

It is not clear whether the girl's parents will be arrested

For the time being, police officers in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, haven't made any arrests in relation to this case. Besides, it is unclear whether, once the ongoing investigation is finally completed, the girl's parents will have charges filed against them.

Thus, it is possible that the girl's death will eventually be ruled no more and no less than an unfortunate accident. The same thing happened back in January, when a toddler shot himself with his father's gun and authorities decided that his parents were not legally responsible for the incident.
