Staff at the Palm Beach & Conservation Society in the United States is pleased to announce that a baby Baird's tapir born at this facility last month is thriving under the watchful eye of its mom.

Caretakers detail that the calf was born to a female named Alyssa on February 17, and that soon after vets established that it was a girl.

Following a naming contest held at the nearby Palmetto Elementary School, it was decided that the baby tapir was to be named Luna.

Despite the fact that it rejected its first calf, Alyssa appears to have taken a liking to Luna and to be doing a good job nursing it and keeping it out of trouble. Zoo Borns tells us that, when it was weighed this past March 7, Luna tipped the scale at 40.5 pounds (18.37 kilograms).

It is expected that, thanks to the nourishment its mom provides it with and to the banana and sweet potatoes snacks that caretakers are more than happy to offer it, it will double its birth weight before it is four weeks old.

The baby tapir is on public display at the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, and staff at the facility says that visitors seem unable to get enough of it.
