IT security and cryptography expert Bruce Schneier is leaving the British telecommunications company BT. The firm has confirmed the rumors sparked by a leaked internal email.

“I would like to announce that Bruce Schneier, BT’s security futurologist, is leaving the company after eight years. Bruce joined BT in 2006 as part of the Counterpane acquisition and has been a great asset to the company,” Mark Hughes, CEO of BT Security, wrote in an email sent to employees.

The leaked email has been shared with The Register. BT representatives have confirmed for the publication that Schneier will be leaving the company at the end of December.

The Register’s source suggested that Schneier was kicked out because of his recent comments regarding the surveillance activities of British and American intelligence agencies. However, BT representatives denied it, saying that their collaboration had “come to a natural end.”

So far, Schneier has not made any comments on this matter.
