14 DAY TRIAL // Every new season, Britain’s Got Talent is filled with wonderful surprises. Last year, for instance, during auditions, the world discovered one of the best selling recording artists of the day, Scottish singer Susan Boyle. This year, we have Janey Cutler, an 81-year-old great grandmother from Glasgow who blew judges away with her powerful voice – but that voice is not enough for audiences in the US to understand her, the Daily Mail points out.
Cutler, already dubbed by the media “NuBo,” as in the “New SuBo / Susan Boyle,” was invited on a morning show on CBS for a brief interview on her performance on BGT auditions and the incredible reaction she got from audience and judges alike (see video here). However, the interviewer had serious problems understanding her thick Scottish accent, which even prompted the other hosts to joke after it was done as to how they needed a translation for it, which would be posted later on the web because surely no one understood what she’d just said.
“Throughout the interview with Maggie Rodriguez the presenters could be heard chuckling and after the interview had been concluded, a male co-presenter told viewers: ‘I’m just getting a translation right now.’ Miss Rodriguez added: ‘We will put it up on the web later’ and added: ‘I just take it that she is happy.’ One of the hosts was then heard doing what appeared to be an impersonation of a Scottish accent,” the Mail writes of what it labels a very “humiliating” interview for Janey Cutler.
Instead of a “translation,” CBS sums up the interview as follows: “On The Early Show, co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez asked Cutler about the comparison and her nickname ‘NuBo,’ meaning ‘New Boyle.’ She replied that she’s ‘on (her) own. I don’t compare myself to anyone,’ she said. Cutler said her family is ‘very proud’ of her. She has six children, 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Cutler likened the experience of performing on Britain’s Got Talent to being on cloud nine, saying, ‘I’m trying to get down.’ Cutler added she began singing when she was 6 years old in the Salvation Army. She joined the company of singers at the church. ‘They called me the “wee soprano” and I was invited to sing with them,’ she said.”
Surely, Cutler’s accent is a bit hard to understand, so it could be that the joke at the end of the interview about needing subtitles to understand her is not in that much bad taste as the Mail suggests. Then again, that would not explain the laughter at the end and why Miss Rodriguez doesn’t even seem to try that hard to interview her properly, it is also being said. It’s best if you see the whole footage and judge for yourselves. Here is Janey Cutler’s performance on Britain’s Got Talent: that one certainly doesn’t need translation.
