Karrueche Tran, the model best known for dating Chris Brown, was on BET right after the MTV VMAs 2014 weekend to co-host a show, and she was unwise enough as to read a joke about Blue Ivy Carter’s hair that came up for her on the teleprompter. She’s been receiving death threats since, even though she apologized.

BET President Stephen Hill is also stepping up to defend her, to apologize for the offense and to urge all those angry Beyonce fans to stop hating on Karrueche because she was not guilty that the joke made it on air.

First things first though: embedded below is a video of the joke. It was part of a little sketch about things that Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay Z’s daughter, must have been thinking during her mother’s performance at the VMAs, where she was honored with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Awards.

One of them, the joke said, was “I woke up like this because my parents never comb my hair,” and mocked the toddler’s naturally curly hair, which even sparked an online petition a short while ago, from a “concerned” woman who begged Beyonce and Jay Z to comb it.

Karrueche laughed and added, “Blue, I’m sorry, I love you,” but Beyonce fans were too outraged to pay any attention to that. So they went after her on social media, to let her know in the most brutal manner that no one should ever mock a child, let alone Beyonce’s.

Hill agrees: including that joke at the expense of a child on the program was very ill-advised and in bad taste. The Daily Mail says that he’s already fired the producer who let this snafu happen.

“Last night on 106 & Park there was a stupid, unthoughtful joke made about a young child,” Hill writes on Twitter. “We apologize publically to the child’s parents (and have done so privately) and we have taken punitive actions with those responsible.”

“It was very bad judgment and we will serve you much better in the future. Oh, and please don’t hate on Karrueche; it was NOT her fault. We also apologize to her for putting her in that position,” Hill adds.

Karrueche has done her share of apologizing as well, though she did hint that she just read the joke off the teleprompter and that she didn’t even know it would be included on the program. However, reports online claim that she read the exact same joke hours before, during rehearsals, which means she knew she would be mocking Blue Ivy once they went live.

It’s true that she didn’t have a say in the inclusion of the joke, but saying she didn’t even know it would be there for her to read is a lie, if the rumors are true.
