Making season 3 of “Sherlock” with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman proved quite a challenge for BBC One because, as popular as the series turned out to be, these two actors were even more so in Hollywood.

Eventually, a third season was made (and aired) to great critical and fan acclaim, but the fate of a fourth one is still unclear, though an estimated release date has been set for 2016. Martin Freeman is here to deliver some good news – and *spoilers* too: fans should not lose all hope of ever seeing Sherlock and his Dr. Watson again.

A Christmas special could be in the works, he tells The Telegraph in a new interview. On the downside, it won’t air until Christmas 2015, so that still means fans have to wait a very long time for it. Assuming it ever gets made, that is, because Freeman stops just short of actually confirming it.

He also says that “for the foreseeable future,” he’s to reprise his role on “Sherlock.” Given the popularity of the series, which is more like a collection of feature films (each season has 3 or 4 episodes, each running 85-90 minutes) than a regular TV series, it would be a very unprofitable move for BBC One not to do everything in their powers to make another season.

Speaking of which, Freeman hints at what fans should expect from it. “While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So he [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die,” he explains.
