The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has released an advisory to warn users about bogus driver’s license renewal emails purporting to come from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The emails appear to be confirmation notifications for vehicle registration transactions or driver’s license renewals.

The BBB says the messages look completely legitimate since they contain tracking numbers, purchase IDs and they seem to originate from a flhsmv.gov email address.

Recipients of these emails are urged to visit a website if they have any questions. However, the website is not operated by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Instead, it’s a malicious website that pushes malware onto visitors’ computers. Once it infects a device, the malware starts looking for personal and financial information which it sends back to the cybercriminals that run the scheme.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is aware of these scams and the organization has issued an advisory of its own. Check out the alert to see how to identify such emails.
