Developer Ronimo Games has announced that the fun-packed brawling game Awesomenauts Assemble! is launching today on the PlayStation 4 home entertainment system.

The initial goal of the Awesomenauts creators was to bring the exciting multiplayer online battle arena experience to console players, in a way that is more fitting to console-specific gameplay interactions, with everything being more direct, skill-based and a lot more colorful.

The new Awesomenauts Assemble game is a mixture of team-based multiplayer and good old alien blasting action, offering players the chance to play as one of 15 different space mercenaries, each one with its own unique abilities and upgrade paths, and engage in fast paced but strategic battles.

Each team is made out of three players, and gamers can either choose to play with friends or other random people, the game supporting both local split-screen as well as online multiplayer. Together, the three-man team will face off against a team of enemy players as well as a slew of automated turrets, droids and local wildlife.

Each one of the competing teams will be blasting its way forward through a lush, hand-drawn alien world, competing toward the goal of destroying the enemy base.

People that have played Awesomenauts before will be in for a surprise, as the game has received a complete overhaul, from the menu systems to balance and even netcode. A host of improvements have been implemented in Awesomenauts Assemble!, as well as a ton of new content.

Awesomenauts Assemble! offers more than twice the amount of characters in the original release, while also adding an entirely new stealth-focused map and some great downloadable skins.

Among the new characters are Gnaw – an adorable alien dog that can spit acid and spawn minion turrets, Skolldir – a hulking space Viking, and Ayla – a devious little girl with vast psychokinetic powers, with even more characters underway.

The development team has secured funding for a major expansion to the PC version of the game last year, through a very successful Kickstarter campaign. The expansion introduced five new characters and custom game settings, as well as a brand new map.

The expansion will also be making its way to the PlayStation 4 version of Awesomenauts, once development is complete, the developers informed via the PlayStation Blog.

The PlayStation 4 porting work was handled by Abstraction Games, a known developer that specializes in translating games from platform to platform, also responsible for Gunslugs and Hotline Miami on PS Vita, among others.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will get a nice bonus in the form of a 20 percent discount during Awesomenauts Assemble!'s launch week.
