Unvanquished, a free, open source first-person shooter combining real-time strategy elements with a futuristic and sci-fi setting, has just received its 30th Alpha release and the developers have celebrated by implementing some new, exciting features.

Unvanquished is still in the Alpha stages and it looks like it's going to remain that way for quite a while. Even so, the developers are making great strides and the updates seem to arrive now in a much quicker pace.

The game is actually a fork of Tremulous, which was a free multiplayer game back when there was no Steam for Linux and when very few developers were actually thinking about supporting the open source platform with their games.

The Unvanquished developers push updates for their title about once a month, but this latest iteration is more consistent than the previous ones. It may have something to do with the round number, or maybe they just increased the pace a little.

“Hello friends, and welcome to the latest installment of Unvanquished. We were nominated as project of the month for July by Linux Game Awards, and we've taken note of the feedback that everyone gave us over the last release. There are many fixes in this one, along with some new content. We are grateful for the nomination and the attention we have received. Thank you!”

“The new armory model is now in this release. As you can probably tell, it looks absolutely nothing like the old one, and presents a more circular design. It's taller than the previous armory, and you'll need to be a bit more creative if you intend to camp on top of it. We are open to suggestions as to what to display on the screens that you can see in the shot,” say the devs in their regular update.

Besides the great new armory models, the developers have also made a number of other improvements. For example, the alien hive defense structure now has a new model, a new beacon system has been implemented, the renderer is now more efficient, the human weapons now all have inertia behind them, the new libRocket interface has been improved, and numerous other fixes have been made.

More details about this amazingly-looking game can be found on the official website. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and bugs are bound to be encountered. You can download Unvanquished Alpha 30 right now from Softpedia.
