It seems that no one can silence Avril Lavigne.

Yesterday we informed you that Avril was charged with stealing the theme from the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" for her "Girlfriend" hit. To her defense she claimed that she never heard the song in her life. Well, Avril decided to issue a statement to clear her name. Here are the main ideas.

First of all, she shows an impressive amount of respect for two artists that have been writing music since before she was born. Just take a look at her exact words:

"You may have heard some news that two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of called the "Rubinoos" are trying to sue me. They have a song called "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend" that has no musical similarities to the song "Girlfriend" that Luke Gottwald and I wrote together."

After she gets out of the way, she closely studies the similarities. In her opinion the only thing that the two songs have in common are only five words. As for the similar meaning of the lyrics, she argues that "as humans we speak the same language".

Avril names two other songs that have the same type of lyrics as hers and the Rubinoos'. One is "Hey, hey, you, you, get off my cloud" by the Rolling Stones, while the other is "Hey little girl I want to be your boyfriend" by the Ramones.

She also has some words for Chantal Kreviazuk for her article in Performing Songwriter Magazine. She accused Avril of using the song "Contagious" on her album without the proper crediting to the rightful composer. This is a very interesting aspect indeed, one that Chantal failed to mention in her interview. It turns out that the only thing the two songs have in common is the title, while the lyrics, the melody and the genre are totally different. And if someone wants to look it up, they can find more than 75 songs that have the same "Contagious" title.

In the same statement, Avril mentions that Chantal apologized to her after the article came out and that she forgives her, but she is still considering taking legal actions.

She concludes her statement to the fans by claiming that she is being attacked because she has reached a certain level. She sure thinks high of herself.

I for one, am looking forward to the trial that will ensue in August. We'll see then who is right.
