Windows XP will be officially discontinued on April 8, 2014, but several third-party companies have already expressed their intention to continue supporting this particular OS beyond this date.

Security company Avira, which currently makes one of the top freeware anti-virus products on the market, has recently revealed that it plans to protect Windows XP computers even after the software giant retires it.

“The best alternative is, of course, Avira Free Antivirus which continues to be supported by Avira one year after the main stream support offered by Microsoft for the operating system ends. Avira Free Antivirus runs on Windows XP SP3 (32-bit), Windows XP SP2 (64-bit) and requires a computer with minimum 1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended),” Avira said.

Microsoft, on the other hand, warns that every single vulnerability found in Windows XP will basically represent an open door for hackers looking for ways to exploit a computer still running this OS version.
