Security software vendor Avira has announced the release of Avira Free Mac Security for OS X customers. The program is a free download “to the expanding universe of Mac owners,” says Avira.

Avira prides itself on making its Mac Security app free for everyone, with no exceptions. Both private consumers and professionals can benefit from its protection, and they won’t be nagged by any advertising or marketing pop-ups either, says the security firm.

Avira claims that it is imperative to have antivirus software installed on your Mac, as the malware threats targeting Mac OS X have increased along with the platform’s market share.

Not only that but “Mac users are inadvertently spreading Windows viruses in heterogeneous computing environments,” says the company.

Travis Witteveen, COO of Avira, shared today that his security analysts are seeing more viruses, worms and Trojans designed specifically for Mac than ever before, as well as “more Macs transporting Windows viruses when they collaborate with PCs, mobile devices and other hardware.”

Witteveen is proud to announce that, “Starting today, we’re stopping Windows viruses from creeping onto your Mac, as well as disabling the malware that is intended just for Mac. And we are giving away Avira Free Mac Security to everyone so that we can all live free, no matter what OS religion you may follow.”

Avira Free Mac Security has a simple user interface that doesn’t require complicated configurations. However, it lets power users dig deeper, according to Avira.

A One-Click Repair function answers the question, ‘Is my Mac secure or not?’, and lets users restore optimum protection levels via the ‘Secure My Mac Now’ button.

Like any proper security solution, Avira Free Mac Security also boasts a scheduler, a thorough malware scanner, remote management, and more.

I'm surprised that they've found viruses. There is assorted malware, but I've yet to see any other anti-virus vendor state that there were viruses for Mac OS X. There were only 42 for Mac OS.

The trouble with Avira is that they have so many ways that the software won't accept an update. I ended up removing their software and going back to AVG, and I'm using Sophos free anti-virus software on my Mac.
