Avril Lavigne just did an interview for Q magazine. And I confess I had to read the whole thing over a few times before I managed to get around the fact that she actually believes everything she talks in there. I mean, I always knew she had a big mouth and I wasn't a fan of her attitude, but she is a very talented singer and the bitchy stuff was always overshadowed by her performance and the fact that she is a strong, intense presence that fans love.
But some of the things in her interview...well, I've picked up some of her statements about herself (in fact, as you will see, most of the things she says are about how cool and happy and talented she is), just to give you a taste of the real Avril Lavigne and it's up to you to judge if you like them or not.
1."Someone like Kelly Clarkson is beautiful and has a pretty voice, but with me you get a much stronger image. I'm tough, I have a look that girls want to copy, and I sound in a particular way. It's good if you're not easily ignored. And I am not".
Hmm. So she thinks Kelly Clarkson is easily ignored and that all over the world there are many Avil-crazed fans whose life ambition is to look like her. Let's hope they don't also want to have that annoying arrogance. Thank God there aren't too many Avril Lavigne fans worldwide, or I have a feeling the world would be a much more violent place.
2."I was 17 when my first album came out, and all of a sudden I had to spend my days doing interviews. Listen, when you are 17 you don't know how to hold a conversation with an adult, and you pretty much don't want to. But I learned to channel that annoyance into my music".
Another star annoyed by her own celebrity. Someone introduce her to Keira Knightley and the two of them can have a nice little chat about just how much of bitch celebrity is.
3."I am a very giving person. (...) I also like to give stuff to people who are my 'workers", especially if they don't have much money".
Usually, giving brings an inner satisfaction and doesn't have to be such a public affair. I think there's a word in the Bible for this kind of false modesty - what do you think?
4."I'm good at picking up people's energy, like I'm receptive or something".
I don't think so. If you had been, you would have become aware by now that people appreciate modesty and a certain degree of humility. Being famous and talented doesn't make you in any way less human - on the contrary.
5."I got married last year simply because I was lucky enough to find the right guy. Did i tame him? Hey, we were both party animals, so we've tamed eachother".
Yes, we get it, not only are you talented, not only do people try to copy your style, not only are you pissed off at being so famous, you also managed to find the perfect man and have the perfect family life. Someone, please, help me unstick my smile.
6."I want to get into the movies next, a lead role in a super cool indie flick. I've been looking at scripts for the past two years now and most of them have been s**t, but I know I could be really good at it. I have an agent now, and everything".
So she's been looking at scripts, but the scripts are to blame, not her non-existing acting skills. Good to know. This explains why Jessica Simpson has a hard time finding a part in a movie - it's because the scripts she's been given don't do her justice. Thanks for allowing that to solve the mystery, Avril.
7."I'm comfortable in my own skin and that's what counts. And anyway, if you do hate me, you're the loser not me".
Now this one is really out of this world. So, basically, if we hate the blonde rocker's unjustified swagger, her selfishness and lack of modesty, that makes us all losers. I think we really should start a friendship club of sorts after Lindsay Lohan gets out of rehab - they'd either get on really well or tear each other's eyes out and we'd all have a laugh at their expense. So who's up for it?
