Aviary, maker of some very interesting and powerful web-based creative tools, has unveiled its Effects API, a tool for developers to add photo processing capabilities to their sites and apps.

The Effects API enables third-party applications to apply a number of filters, corrections and trimming tools to pics.

With the rise in popularity of photo sharing and modifying apps, which offer rather simple functionality but shine in the experience and user interface department, an API enabling anyone to give their pics a 'vintage' look provides a level playing filed.

"Aviary’s Effects API is a powerful bulk processing service that can apply a number of filters and utilities to multiple photos at once," Aviary announced.

"The best part is that it runs through our server, letting you – the developer – focus on your existing app while we provide your users with the new ability to perfect their photos without doing any work," it explained.

There are thee types of capabilities offered by the API. First, there is a set of practical filters and tools which enable users to fix the contrast and color levels of their photos and do several other touch-ups.

There are also several fun filters as well to give photos a distinct look, in the style of most of the photo apps out there. Some example filters are fall into categories like retro, polaroid, frames, comic book and so on.

Finally, the app also has tools for cropping images, rotating or resizing them or even creating thumbnails for them.

"Our Effects API offers both utility operations and fun photo filters. You can check out the documentation for technical details of how we process photos behind the scenes," Aviary explained.

Aviary is also launching a website for developers, providing documentation and guidance. Since it offers three distinct APIs already, the company believed it was time for a clearer explanation of the distinctions between them.
