A lot of hope from the producer

Hollywood is certainly interested in making movies based on games. Probably because it's so hard these days for script writers to come up with a decent movie idea and it's much easier to just copy one from a game and add some side stories. Most of the recent movies based on games that we saw weren't Oscar material to say the least. Also, the Max Payne movie is going to come out soon and director Brett Ratner has already said that the God of War based movie is just waiting for the green light from the production studio to start shooting. So, it looks like we're still in for a lot of movies. In an interview with Kotaku, Avi Arad, one of the most influential Hollywood directors, talked about the movie projects in development that are based on games.

It sure is quite a line up; he has movies based on Everquest, Lost Planet, Mass Effect and last, but not least, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Regarding all these titles, he said that they would revolutionize the game based movie genre, promising to respect the story of the games and only develop it in order to make it more interesting for movie lovers.

Speaking about the Uncharted movie, this is what he had to say, “The best thing about Drake is he's not an archaeologist. He's not a benevolent guy, but he's certainly not a great guy. Indiana Jones was always a good guy and he relentlessly did the right thing. Drake is a guy who's being hauled over to virtue throughout the game. One of my favorite scenes is when he finally finds Drake's body and he discovers he was out to hide the statue instead of steal it. Suddenly, after all of these excuses he had of being a marauder like his forefather, now he discovers he was a hero. He's required to become a better guy and he does become a better guy. The secret of El Dorado ties into that because he doesn't become a greedy guy and doesn't become a monster”.

In regards to the concrete plans, he said that the movie would develop the action before the arrival to the island where the game takes place. It will study in depth modern day piracy and will develop Drake's character.

All in all, it sounds pretty nice, let's just hope that at least one of these movies will be worth going to the cinema.
