The web is becoming increasingly complex and the latest web technology enable developers to push the envelope. And they're clearly doing it. Pingdom, relying on HTTP Archive data, is reporting that the average web page has grown in size by 25 percent in the last year alone.
When looking at the top 1,000 sites in the world, the average page has gone from 626 kB to 784 kB.
This becomes even more interesting when looking at the type of content that make up the pages. All resources have grown in size in the last year, HMTL files, images, JavaScript, CSS. Images still account for most of the size of a page.
But the biggest growth in file size is attributed to JavaScript code. The average page on the web now has JavaScript files that are 44.7 percent bigger than just a year ago.
