The identity of the current-day ancestor of Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation protagonist Aveline will be a key mystery in the game, at least according to its writer, Jill Murray, who believes players will invest time in solving it and enjoying the game.

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is a PS Vita exclusive and tells the story of Aveline, a young half-French half-African woman who explores 18th century New Orleans in order to defeat the evil Templars.

Previous Assassin’s Creed games, however, have all dealt with the ancestors of a single current-day protagonist, Desmond Miles.

In the case of Aveline, the current-day protagonist isn’t known, which adds to the mystery of the game, according to writer Jill Murray.

“Liberation is unique. The other games, so far, have had the character of Desmond as a present day anchor into the story. Liberation takes place entirely in the past, and we do not know who’s ancestor Aveline is. So we’re not sure where these genetic memories have been sequenced from,” she told the Financial Post.

“But we know that this company — Abstergo Industries — has captured them and has packaged them in order to show us. So why does this [evil] corporation want us to see the story, what are they getting at? That’s part of the mystery of the game.”

The fact that Aveline is the first playable female assassin in the series has been great for Murray and for the franchise, as the core gameplay didn’t change because of the heroine’s gender.

“I think the really great thing is that it really hasn’t changed how the game is presented,” she said about the switch. “I think it has injected some fresh energy and some new opportunities into the game.”

“Aveline, the female protagonist is something that the team in Sofia was extremely enthusiastic about right from the beginning. For myself, I like to think I don’t have to dig very far to understand what an adventurous woman might think like. So from that respect, it was pretty great to write freely.”

Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation is out on October 31 for the PS Vita.
