Avatar is still the highest grossing movie when it comes to three dimensional releases but it seems that its main creator believes that a MMO based on the franchise would allow fans to make choices and have freedoms that the film version lacks.

Speaking to IGN James Cameron, well known for creating the 3D hit Avatar, has said, “I think Avatar is a perfect IP for an MMO. It’s a very, very big world. Based on the first film, you might not sense that, but we’re talking about an entire planet, an entire alter world, and in fact a universe that has other planetary bodies, as well, and other cultures, other life forms.”

The director seems to suggest that the MMO might be based on the other two movies that are planned in the Avatar trilogy, which might mean that fans might have to wait for it for a few years.

Cameron added, “Eventually people will see enough scope to be able to see how the MMO will work, but that’s going to have to be launched…the timing of that is going to have to be carefully orchestrated with the release of the second and third film because we don’t want to be giving away elements before the fact.”

Despite his allegiance to the movie industry James Cameron has acknowledged the fact that the MMORPG space and gaming in general offers much more of a possibility for choice than filmed entertainment.

He also defended the Avatar video game created by Ubisoft, saying that it lacked brand awareness and arrived before the movie made its impact.

It's not clear whether the French publisher will also be working on more single player titles based on Avatar, timed to launch just after the second and the third title in the series.

The next Avatar movie is scheduled for 2014.
