Schluchtenscheisser is the codename of the 2008.11 release of a Debian-based Live CD called grml. The new version, grml 2008.11, was announced a few days ago and it includes a number of bug fixes, improvements and software updates. It is powered by a new Linux kernel, based on vanilla kernel 2.6.26.8, which includes various patches and a few extra modules such as madwifi, ndiswrapper, at76-usb, openafs, VirtualBox-ose-guest, rt73, rt2500, rt2400, linux-wlan-ng, loop-aes, squashfs, kqemu.

Let's take a look at some other changes brought by grml 2008.11:

· vcs_info was integrated in the Zsh prompt; · the tohd and isofrom boot options were re-implemented; · syslog-ng was replaced by rsyslog; · support for Swedish keyboard layout was added; · if the 'ssh' boot option does not have any other option, a random password will be used.

grml 2008.11 also introduces two new scripts:

· grml-chroot - a chroot wrapper, which handles the proc/sys/pts/dev filesystem; · swspeak-setup - activates the software speak(up) features, which are used within the swspeak boot option.

About grml

grml is a Debian-based Live CD Linux distribution. It includes a collection of 100% FREE software especially for users of text-mode tools (yes, for us, the geeks) and system administrators. grml provides automatic hardware detection, and can be used as a rescue system, for analyzing systems/networks, or as a working environment. Being a Live CD, it is not necessary to install anything on the hard drive, and you don't even need a hard disk to run it, unless you want to. Due to on-the-fly decompression, grml includes about 2.1 GB of software and documentation on the Live CD.
