Karl Goetz proudly announced today the second maintenance release of gNewSense 2, an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution that contains only 100% free software. Dubbed DeltaH and available only for the 32-bit architecture, the new gNewSense 2.2 Live CD contains mainly security updates and a few other important improvements. But the good news is that the 3D desktop effects powered by Compiz Fusion are working again in this release and they will be enabled by default after the installation.

"The gNewSense project is pleased to announce version 2.2 of its 100% FSF Free GNU/Linux distribution. This is the second point update to the release codenamed 'deltah'. This release was made 2009-04-15, and contains all security updates made to the archive up to and including 2009-04-14. This release introduces GLX back into the default install. This enables hardware accelaration by default, meaning Compiz and 3D games will work once again." - Karl Goetz, gNewSense contributor, said in the official release announcement.

Highlights of gNewSense 2.2:

· Two new filesystems were added in the installer; · Re-added hardware acceleration (GLX); · The description of "backports" and "updates" was changed in the Software Sources tool; · The linux-image-386 package was replaced with linux-image-generic; · Fixed the output of lsb_release; · The GNU Icecat software repository is available via the Software Sources tool.

About gNewSense

The gNewSense LiveCD is a Linux distribution based on the popular Ubuntu operating system. gNewSense project's goal is to take all the binary blobs out of a rather popular distribution and make it all free, 100% FREE! Therefore, the gNewSense team has removed all proprietary firmware, restricted modules and Ubuntu logos, while the "Universe" repository is enabled by default. Some applications such as Emacs, bsdgames, nethack and build-essential are part of the default installation. The gNewSense team has also produced a set of scripts that allow anyone to create a GNU/Linux Distribution.
