While busy with his new house, Tomas Matejicek, father of the Slax distribution, decided to please his users and announced last night a new maintenance release for Slax: "I've been a bit busy (as usual) and it will be the same for the following few weeks, I'm building a new house and I have to be there everyday. You know, the working-men are unpredictable and they require continuous supervision in order to make things correctly." The big news is that this is supposed to be the last release of the Slax 6 series and no new features will be added from now on, until Slax 7 will be out (not very soon) and it will be built on top of KDE 4.

While still being powered by Linux kernel 2.6.27.8, Slax 6.1 is here to fix some issues with the split base modules, improve the "Build Slax" feature, and fix Fluxbox-related bugs. Moreover, a new wallpaper, login sound and fake XDM were added to Slax 6.1.

"I noticed few requests for kernel upgrade, since currently it has the same configuration like in the previous version 6.0.9 - the kernel is 2.6.27.8. I think it is possible, please describe to me what changes do you need, send it using "Contact" link. But do not only tell me 'enable this' or 'disable that'... rather precisely explain what needs to be done step by step, that will significantly increase the chances that your suggestion will be accepted." - Matejicek continued in his blog post.

Slax is available in two formats, as ISO and USB images. The former can be burnt on a CD, while the latter can be used on a USB flash drive. Although this distribution has approximately 200 MB, it comes with KDE, K-Office, audio and video encoders, multimedia players, a web browser and instant messenger, CD/DVD burning and ripping tools and a lot more. Slax is translated in languages such as Danish, Dutch, Galician, Greek, Croatian and many others.
