For x86 and x86_64 platforms!

The CentOS development team announced a few hours ago the immediate availability of the single CD Server install for CentOS 4.7 Linux distribution. The CentOS 4.7 operating system is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.7 and it was officially released, for both i386 and x86_64 architectures, on September 13th, 2008.

We wish to remind you that the installer for the 32bit version of the CentOS 4.7 Server CD will work only with i686 CPUs and it doesn't support the very old K6 ones. On the other hand, the 64bit edition doesn't include 32bit packages, therefore you'll end up with a pure 64bit installation.

The CentOS developers configured yum, the software package manager, to automatically use the entire software repository (for both 32bit and 64bit editions). Moreover, they encourage all users to run yum update as soon as the installation is over, to ensure that third-party applications and drivers will maintain compatibility.

CentOS is a 100% compatible rebuild of the RHEL OS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), developed by a small group of core developers, who are supported by an active user community made up from enterprise users, network administrators, system administrators and Linux enthusiasts. The purpose of CentOS is to provide a free enterprise class operating system to anyone who wants to use it.

The CentOS operating system supports the same architectures as its ancestor, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, does: Intel x86- (32-bit), Intel IA-64 (Itanium 64-bit), x86-64 (64-bit, AMD's AMD64 and Intel's Intel 64), IBM Mainframe (eServer zSeries and S/390).
