The team behind the AntiX project recently announced the release of AntiX MEPIS 8.0 (Intifada), a fast and lightweight Linux distribution based on SimplyMEPIS and Debian Testing, including some features of sidux as well.

AntiX MEPIS 8.0 has a default IceWM desktop and Fluxbox as an optional environment. With a SimplyMEPIS 8.0 base, this distribution highlights a 2.6.27-15 Linux kernel, improves on its Control Centre, and it has new screenshot scripts and a phonebook. Also available are better themes and artwork for the desktop environments included. Localisation is also an aspect that was improved in this release.

Highlights of AntiX MEPIS 8.0:

· Iceweasel 3.0.6 as the default web browser; · Pidgin 2.4 for instant messaging; · The lightweight Abiword 2.6.4 text editor; · Gnumeric 1.8-3 for spreadsheets; · The ROX-Filer X Window System file manager; · Claws-Mail 3.5.

Other features of this version are in the form of sidux meta-installer, better supported wired and wireless connections through updated ceni and wicd packages, UMTSmon, an application that facilitates connecting through a 3G USB modem and FireHOL firewall. The popluar Brasero CD/DVD burning program was replaced by GnomeBaker and the default terminal emulator is now Urxvt instead of Wterm. AntiX MEPIS 8.0 now has X.Org 7.3, an auto-login option through SLiM, the smxi, inxi and svmi scripts. Newly included applications are zim, a wiki for desktop, Gjots for note-taking, Grsync, parted and luckyBackup.

About AntiX:

Remastered from MEPIS, AntiX was tailored in such a way that it would run on very low-end Pentium II-generation computers with no more than 64 MB of RAM, though the recommended amount of RAM would be 128.
