Internet users are advised to be on the lookout for a cleverly designed email scam that purports to be coming from Wells Fargo, asking recipients to provide tons of sensitive information allegedly needed as part of an ATM account information update.

AppealDemocrat informs that the messages look very authentic, incorporating the financial institution’s logo, urging users to provide some data in order to ensure that the use of the bank’s services will not become limited.

The attachment that comes with the email consists of a web form that requests information such as user ID, credit card number, verification number, email password, mother’s maiden name, PIN, driver’s license number and Social Security number.

Users are advised never to provide sensitive information in response to an email, no matter how legitimate-looking it is. Some cybercriminals rely on links, others on malicious attachments, but in any of these situations the end purpose is the same: to steal bank account information.
