Until now, the only mystery regarding the new interface for Firefox, dubbed Australis, was the version of the browser that would feature it. Not anymore, since Mozilla has made it clear on their feature wiki page that Australis will be part of Firefox 19.

The purpose of the tab strip redesign is to bring out the current active tab and create a “smooth and streamlined appearance.”

Check out the pictures here for a glimpse at what Firefox tab strip will look like on various operating systems. Australis has already landed in Thunderbird.

With an estimated release date for mid-February 2013, Firefox 19 is still a long way to go, but we should see the new looks in the first nightly build of this version, on October 9.

I just hope you can turn it off, as it cuts down on usable space.
