The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has warned Groupon about the emails it has been sending customers. Apparently, the online retailer’s newsletter subscription system was a bit buggy.

When users provided their email address to the company, they were automatically signed on for a number of newsletters. However, when they unsubscribed, they only unsubscribed from one of them.

In addition to this, the unsubscribe requests in some cases were not processed within the five-day period as required by the Spam Act.

After receiving complaints from unhappy customers, ACMA issued a formal warning, advising Groupon to provide clear information regarding newsletters.

In response to the warning, the company has implemented an account management system, which allows users to choose what emails they want to receive. In addition, the wording regarding the unsubscribe process has been made clearer on both the website and in emails.

ACMA advises consumers to report any marketing emails that don’t comply with the Spam Act to [email protected].
