The Australian Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) has given its approval for iPads and iPhones to be used by government officials to store and communicate classified information.

According to Herald Sun, DSD representatives are confident that Apple devices running iOS 5 are secure enough to perform sensitive tasks.

“Embracing new technologies, such as smartphones and tablet PCs, provides government with a genuine opportunity to conduct its business more efficiently. However, the threat of government information being stolen or compromised is also very real,” said Mike Burgess, the acting director of DSD.

The devices not only passed a number of thorough verification processes, but the agency also made available a guide, developed in collaboration with the industry, that contains advice on how to use iPhones and iPads safely.
