Authorities in New South Wales (NSW) have arrested and charged a Romanian man believed to be involved in a criminal ring that uses 3D printers and CAD software to created sophisticated ATM skimming devices.

In June, NSW Police established a special taskforce to combat the increasing number of crimes, iTnews reports.

While one of the models used by the fraudsters isn’t out of the ordinary, a smaller type of skimmer discovered by authorities is “quite impressive” because it’s contained within a resin block.

Police know of two financial institutions that have been impacted, but they’ve declined to name them.

A total of 15 ATMs from the Sydney metropolitan area have been targeted by the group. Around AU$100,000 (€69,000) have been stolen from tens of thousands of credit card holders.

Law enforcement believes the crooks are from Romania because they’ve traced some of the stolen funds to the country.
