It has been recently reported by Deloitte studies that some countries and even whole areas from the globe suffer from low cyber-security. Australia is amongst them as well. But I guess that you already knew that - the news here is the fact that they are doing something to fight Internet crime.

After their banks and important institutions as well as government targets have been hit by hackers, the Australians decided that they need to fight
cyber-crime better. This is why their Police force will now have the right to ban some sites. They will basically curb Internet access for Australian surfers, and not allow anyone to visit sites that are deemed dangerous. Affected sites will be the ones regarding terrorism, as well as web pages that are used by hackers as their tools.

This is a pretty good security measure, as it will protect less tech-savvy users from hacker attacks, but I hope that they really treat this seriously as otherwise, it's not going to do much good. If they ban one site and the hacker just builds another and another, then they're not getting anywhere. Surely, this is not going to make a huge difference in cyber-security, but it's a good start, considering the fact that they're not known for their top-notch cyber-security.

However, this should have been done earlier, but it's better late than never. Blacklists are going to be issued and things are going to get a little bit better. Sure, no law enforcer can protect you on the web, if you put yourself in jeopardy by not using AVs and firewalls, but at least they're doing a little bit more, which is a great thing!

The Australian Federal Police will get all these new rights after a new bill will be accepted, but I don't think that any state could reject a law that helps the better enforcement of security.
