Audacity, a fast, cross-platform multitrack audio editor and recorder that supports WAV, AIFF, Ogg, and MP3 formats, has been updated to version 1.3.6. The new release addresses Import / Export issues, but also enhances the program’s existing features.

Using Audacity you can envelope-edit your audio files, do a bit of mixing using built-in effects and plug-ins and, if you mess up, at any point, you have unlimited undo. The free audio editor for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or later (Leopard 10.5.4 and lower) is aimed at audiophiles, and fans of music-making solutions, such as Ableton Live. You can use this software as a sidekick to record and play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. This makes things easier for the user than having to fire up a big program that does so much more, and confuses them with all the available options. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal; it also supports VST plug-in effects.

Changes occurring in the latest release span Interface, Import / Export and more. We'll list a few of them for you here to highlight the importance of this update.

Interface & Import / Export

- "Save Compressed Copy of Project" saves in much smaller. OGG format to facilitate online transmission of projects - Improved MIDI import and export routines, and clearer color for selection region - Default temporary directory on Mac now accessible in Finder - Stability improvements in on-demand loading - FFMpeg: support for latest version of library, improved version checks and error messages, stability improvements in custom exporter.

Dominic Mazzoni, the developer of Audacity, also fixed a crash in "Get Noise Profile" step of Noise Removal at project rates below 20480 Hz, as well as an underestimation of peak level in tracks with a small number of different peaks. Truncate Silence that could result in repeated or lost audio if applied to the whole of a track has been addressed, with more interface, generating, exporting and platform-specific fixes making their way into this release as well.
