Atom Egoyan's has recently earned a NC-17 rating Wednesday on Atom Egoyan's 'Where the Truth Lies,' which might limit the film's American audience, according to the director.

The decision which forbids every American teenager under 18 years of age to see the movie was motivated by the "explicit sexuality," as Joan Graves, of the Motion Picture Association of America, said from Los Angeles.

"What we're supposed to do is rate the film the way we think most American parents would rate it," explained Graves.

"We're supposed to reflect standards, not set them. Our board believes that most parents would think it's in the adult category."

ThinkFilm, the Toronto-based distributor for the film, intends to appeal the rating board's decision.

Producer Robert Lantos underlined the fact that many violent films pass muster with the U.S. ratings board, while sexuality is often taboo.

"I guess I'm naive. I really had no idea it would be a problem. I just heard the deciding factor could be thrusting. Apparently, anything over three thrusts and you're in trouble. Well, nobody told me", film-maker Atom Egoyan said

"I didn't even do covering shots, so there's nothing I can cut away to. This is what you get', the director added.

'Where the Truth Lies' starring Colin Firth, Rachel Blanchard and Kevin Bacon, directed by one of the most appreciated Canadian directors, tell the story of two men whose lives are torn asunder after a woman is found dead in their hotel suite.

The film's graphic sex scenes, including a ménage a trios, which raised eyebrows earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, are to be seen in Canada on Oct. 7 and a week later in New York and Los Angeles, with wider release of the movie to follow.
