Civilization 5 Lead Designer Jon Shafer ran a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year for his latest project, At the Gates, which ended up raising more than double its intended goal.

Polygon reports that At the Gates developer Conifer Games announced that, unfortunately, the release date for At the Gates will be pushed back to some time in 2015.

At the Gates is a historical turn-based strategy title for the PC, an empire builder in the vein of the legendary Civ saga. You start with a small tribe of barbarians, explore the world, gather resources and build your way into a dominant power, during the final days of the Roman Empire.

The developers set out to create a complex experience, with a robust economy and complex diplomacy, harsh resource management and changing seasons you have to plan ahead for.

While the game “could be released as originally planned in mid-2014 as a ‘good’ game,” Jon Shafer decided to postpone its launch, claiming that “at the end of the day what we all want is a great game,” according to the Kickstarter project's latest update.

Conifer Games plans to open the game up to beta testing in early 2014, intending to give the game the necessary time it needs to be the polished and awe-inspiring title it set out to be in the first place.
