Market research firm Asymco has found that Apple's iPod touch has sold more than 45 million units over its lifetime, or about 38 percent of all iOS devices sold to date.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs officially stated at the company's media event last week that some 120 million iOS devices had been sold to that day.

Another known fact was that some 59.6 million iPhones were sold through June, according to unearthed SEC filings.

Adding the 3.2 million iPads into the mix, Asymco was able to quantify the amount of iPod touches accounting for the round 120 million figure.

Here’s their analysis:

“On September 1st, Apple announced that 120 million iOS devices were sold to date.

We know that there were 59.6 million iPhones sold through June (from SEC filings)

We also know that 3.2 million iPads were sold.

If we assume about 8 million iPhones and 4 million iPads were sold during August and July, the total number of iPod touch sold is 45.2 million.

That is 37.7% of total units.”

Asymco further explains that “the expansion of iPhone distribution plus the addition of iPad [h]as reduced the platform footprint for the iPod.”

“…but it’s still a sizable chunk,” says Asymco.

“More than one in three iOS units in use are non-cellular devices. As the iPad rolls that number could move toward 50%,” the research firm believes.

Asymco is a very young company which touts itself as being a unique hybrid of an app production studio and an industry analysis advisory.

According to the firm’s about-us, both these practices help each other grow.

Asymco has been providing mobile app development services to business customers for less than a year now, but it offers its expertise in many areas, including messaging, information, publishing, shopping, logistics and brand promotion.

Asymco claims to poses “artistry” in techniques such as business model making, User Interface design, architecture, and digital animation.

Apple has recently introduced the fourth-generation iPod touch, which features FaceTime video calling, Apple’s Retina Display, and comes pre-installed with iOS 4.1 (which includes Game Center).
